Year 5 pupils from Kew Green Prep enjoyed an inspiring visit to their senior sister school, Kew House, where they took part in a unique, hands-on learning experience using the school’s specialist facilities.
Older Year 9 pupils studying French and/or Food Preparation and Nutrition at Kew House worked alongside the younger children, guiding them through a practical cooking session in the senior school’s fully equipped food technology kitchens. What made the experience particularly special was its cross-curricular focus: all instructions were given in French, requiring pupils to listen carefully, follow directions and apply their language skills in a real-life context.
During the session, pupils made crêpes from scratch, measuring ingredients, mixing batter and cooking their creations while practising key French vocabulary linked to food, utensils and cooking processes. This immersive approach brought Modern Foreign Languages to life, helping pupils see how language learning can be applied beyond the classroom while developing valuable practical cooking skills at the same time.
The session also encouraged teamwork and confidence, as Kew House pupils acted as mentors, demonstrating techniques and supporting their younger peers. Working in small groups, the children collaborated, communicated and problem-solved together, building independence and resilience in a stimulating and supportive environment.
As part of the Gardener Schools Group, Kew Green Prep benefits from close links with its two senior schools, giving pupils access to specialist facilities and learning experiences that go far beyond those typically available in standalone prep schools. These opportunities enhance pupils’ education and provide valuable preparation for senior school life, helping to build confidence, aspiration and familiarity with advanced resources from an early age.
Experiences like this highlight the strength of the partnership between Kew Green Prep and Kew House. By learning in senior-school environments and working with older pupils, children gain insight into the next stage of their education while enjoying rich, engaging and memorable learning experiences that connect subjects in meaningful, real-world ways.
