Environmental and Social Responsibility (ESR)

At Kew, we take a unique approach to education, examining all aspects of the pupil’s learning journey. We ensure they not only acquire knowledge but also develop an understanding of how to be responsible citizens and support their local community.

Our school is committed to actively engaging with its staff, pupils, and parents to foster awareness by making a meaningful impact on our community and chosen charity. By working collaboratively, our school aims to instil a sense of environmental and social responsibility among its stakeholders. This collective effort underpins our school’s dedication to positively contributing to the immediate community and broader society.

Through initiatives and outreach, the school seeks to nurture a culture of compassion, environmental stewardship, and social consciousness, developing a sense of shared responsibility that extends beyond the classroom and into the wider world.

The environmental and social responsibility role ensures that pupils gain experience in:

  • Awareness—We want pupils to be aware of local charities, the values we are instilling, and how to help the local community.
  • Contribution – For pupils to give up their time to the school, local environment, and local community.
  • Impact—Actions have been implemented in the school, and pupils need to see a physical difference in their positive actions.

The three areas that the ESR focuses on allow pupils to experience a hands-on approach, including an environmental report, lower and upper school council, volunteering opportunities, fundraising, awareness promotion, donation delivering, charity support and litter picking, to name a few.

A message from Mr Aidan McClaughlin, Headteacher at Kew Green Preparatory School:

At Kew Green, our school mission is to see every child as an individual, inspiring and equipping them to be ambitious and achieve success; motivated and able to shape a brighter future for themselves and society more widely.

Our Environmental and Social Responsibility objectives are, therefore, an essential and celebrated part of our school life, strengthened further by our expectations for our pupils to eagerly engage with opportunities, use their growing self-esteem to take risks, and their articulate voices to share ideas, lead, work together and make a difference.

For us, it’s important our pupils have an awareness of our society and the world around them, motivated and ambitious to make a positive impact from their position.

A message from Mr Will Parker, Head of Environmental and Social Responsibility:

“Since launching our Environmental and Social projects last year, our children’s enthusiasm for this topic has grown dramatically. It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside the School Council, collecting their ideas, putting them into practice and seeing them develop. There has been a buzz of excitement around making changes at KGPS to become more environmentally friendly and socially aware. Our children have recognised what we do well and noted where we can continue to develop.

We have had such fun on our special days. There has been a real understanding that giving back to the community and making environmentally conscious decisions can feel so rewarding.

I feel incredibly proud of the projects our children have planned for the future. It will be a pleasure to work alongside them to make them a reality.

Here is to an even greener Kew Green!”
