The pastoral care and wellbeing of our pupils is paramount.
Pupils are grateful to the staff who support and care for them and say that they feel safe in their school – Independent Schools Inspectorate, 2023
We provide a safe and nurturing environment at Kew Green Prep, with strong and trusted relationships between pupils, staff and parents driving the success of our pastoral care and wellbeing provision.
ISI quote: Pupils display confidence in their school community and say they are valued as individuals.
Our high teacher to pupil ratio, underpinned by our ethos to recognise every child as an individual, ensures that all our staff are part of the individual journey of our pupils. Our staff know every pupil and our ‘open door’ policy for parents further strengthens our understanding of our pupils.
All pupils engage in a carefully planned assembly programme which includes three weekly assemblies: whole-school assembly, a section school assembly and a merit assembly at the end of the week. The assemblies support pastoral themes, further developing learning points from PSHEE teaching as well as providing a platform to learn about careers and to respond to any wellbeing areas of need. All pupils are encouraged to engage during assemblies, to share their opinions and ask questions. The merit assembly at the end of the week celebrates pupil progress and achievement across all areas of school life, learning and personal development. The merit assembly programme is coordinated to recognise and celebrate all pupils throughout the year.
We champion our pupil voice, and the School Council and Year 6 prefects lead this area of the school. There are multiple pupil-led initiatives throughout each school year and pupils confidently and regularly share ideas and feedback with staff.
Our teachers listen to our ideas. For example, we completed a pupil survey for how to improve Upper School snack and the school made the changes – it’s now much better! Year 6 pupil

The school calendar further supports our pastoral care and wellbeing provision, including the organisation and celebration of key initiatives such as ‘Wellbeing Week, World Mental Health Day and Online Safety.’ We also make use of our Reading Cave in the playground for pupils who would prefer a quieter space during the school day and we have two part-time therapists, on-site, to support any pupils who would benefit from a specialist session.
The pastoral and wellbeing provision works alongside our robust safeguarding culture at Kew Green Prep, lead by our safeguarding team. All our staff are fully trained and committed to prioritising the safety of our pupils.
