Revolting Children Shine in our KGPS Theatre!

For one week only, Kew Green Prep School was transformed into the dazzling KGPS Theatre, as our incredible Year 4 pupils took to the stage to perform Matilda Jr. — and what a show it was.

From the very first note, the audience knew they were in for something special. The children delivered their lines with confidence and comic timing, but it was the exceptional singing that truly stole the show. Numbers such as Naughty, When I Grow Up, and Revolting Children were performed with power, clarity and genuine theatrical flair. The harmonies were tight, the solos courageous and expressive, and the energy infectious.

Parents were visibly moved. One shared, “I rarely wear make up and last night reminded me why (!) because I had tears rolling down my cheeks for most of the performance — for all the right reasons!!” Another described it as “a triumph… wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.”

The production was packed with memorable moments and spectacular props. A wonderfully realistic doll of Amanda Thripp, complete with flying pigtails, drew gasps and laughter during the infamous throwing scene. The stage glowed with flashes of bright green hair, capturing Matilda’s magical mischief perfectly.

Adding to the drama were not one but two terrifying Trunchbulls, each bringing formidable presence to the role. With booming voices, fearsome glares and impressively powerful performances, they had the audience both trembling and thoroughly entertained.

And then there was the cake. A truly enormous chocolate cake took centre stage for Bruce Bogtrotter’s unforgettable moment — so large and delicious-looking that the audience could almost taste it.

As one parent joked, “Eating cake with an audience — how will he ever be satisfied with anything else? He peaked aged 8.”

In preparation for the performance, Year 4 were thrilled to take part in a specialist workshop delivered by a member of the West End cast of Matilda. The children learnt about characterisation, stage presence and vocal technique — and this professional insight shone through in the polish and confidence of their final performances. As one family commented, “The quality was high but not at the expense of fun and good humour.”

Drama at KGPS is woven throughout the curriculum and is a vital part of school life. From class assemblies and poetry competitions to full-scale productions and musical concerts, every child has the opportunity to perform and grow in confidence. Our thriving LAMDA programme further develops pupils’ communication skills, while our partnership with Kew House allows us to make use of professional-standard dance studios and theatre spaces to enhance rehearsals and performances.

The school community rallied behind the production, with staff, families and pupils all playing their part in transforming our hall into a fully-fledged theatre space. Lighting, staging, costumes and choreography combined to create a truly immersive experience.

One parent summed up the spirit of the week perfectly: “THE BEST GROUP OF KIDS. I love them all so much. The giggles were so raw and gorgeous and utterly joyful. And then of course there are the LOVELY teachers. Top gang!” Another wrote simply, “That was just brilliant!!! We all loved it. They clearly really enjoyed it too. Thank you for all your hard work! They were wonderful.”

Maria Gardener, the school’s founder, captured the collective pride of the community:

“What a performance! The children performed out of their skins and older than their years. It was like being transported to a show at the West End. So very proud of every one of our Year 4 children.”

As the final chorus rang out and the curtain fell, the standing ovation said it all.

Bravo, Year 4 — you were nothing short of revoltingly brilliant!
