Kew Green Preparatory School (KGPS) recently brought the world of Vincent van Gogh to life with a spectacular whole-school exhibition, celebrating the artist’s iconic works and wider influences. From Nursery to Year 6, pupils immersed themselves in a creative journey that stretched far beyond the art classroom—making art history both exciting and academically enriching.
Inspiring Creativity Across the Curriculum
The Van Gogh project inspired a wide range of cross-curricular learning opportunities. A standout achievement was a Year 6 pupil who won the prestigious Wimbledon BookFest Poetry Prize for her poem Starry Night, written in response to her study of Van Gogh’s masterpiece. Earlier in the year, Year 5 pupils also enjoyed an outdoor workshop on the school green with contemporary artist Jonjo Elliot, generously supported by Clarendon Fine Art, where they explored Van Gogh’s painting techniques through a modern artistic lens.
These experiences highlight how art can inspire literacy, critical thinking, and personal expression – helping children connect creativity with academic achievement.
A School Transformed into a Van Gogh Gallery
On Friday 4th July, the school was transformed into a vibrant, immersive art gallery. Every corner of KGPS showcased imaginative displays, from giant sunflower and crow sculptures to striking textile pieces and expressive landscape and still-life paintings in pastel and acrylic.
A centrepiece of the exhibition was a giant Van Gogh-inspired birthday cake, collaboratively crafted by pupils and parents in celebration of the school’s 20th anniversary. Alongside the artwork, children delighted in a themed Van Gogh photo booth and a creative colouring station, making the exhibition both interactive and unforgettable.
Inspired by Van Gogh’s Masterpieces
The children’s artwork reflected their study of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings, including:
By reinterpreting these works, pupils not only developed their artistic techniques but also deepened their understanding of art history and cultural heritage.
Connecting School and the Wider Art World
The exhibition paid tribute to the Van Gogh exhibition currently on display at the National Gallery and looked ahead to the Van Gogh and Anselm Kiefer exhibition at the Royal Academy, bringing world-class art themes directly into the heart of the school community.
Founder, Mrs Gardener, commented:
“This project has given our pupils a wonderful opportunity to connect with art history in an imaginative, hands-on way. Creativity is a defining part of who we are at KGPS, and this project provided the perfect opportunity to nurture our pupils’ creativity, strengthen their confidence, and build their awareness of how art can inspire every aspect of learning.”
This immersive Van Gogh exhibition demonstrated how art in education enriches learning by:
At KGPS, projects like this ensure pupils gain not only technical skills but also a deeper appreciation for creativity as an essential part of their academic and personal growth.
